I'm in Sydney Airport, just one step away from being back home after a short but inspiring trip to the US.

I spent a few days in San Francisco, a few days in LA, then a few days in Palm Springs.

Here is a serving of pictures to go along with it.

Jeremy Fish 'Silly Pink Bunnies' install on Haight St, SF.

There is a multitude of great signage all over the place in SF. John's Grill - no exception.

San Francisco Trolley Cars look good and carry you places, simple and effective.

People put lots of posters on the poles over there.

A visit to San Fran wouldn't be complete without going to the MOMA.

Made my way down to Palm Springs which was amazing!

If you're interested in Mid Century Architecture, Palm Springs is a must visit place!

Woven Dreams Show

I love being invited to exhibit artwork, really, how nice is that!

I'm represented by Retrospect Galleries in Byron Bay and Broadbeach, and it means alot because they have serious overheads that they need to cover, so if they can sell some of my works to contribute, that can only be a good thing!

So the Woven Dreams Show opens on the 11th of November. {11.11.11} That crazy date that all the marketeers are excited about.

Here are a couple of the new pieces i'm going to show.

FIND: Archer & Archer

We're in the throws of launching a side project called Archer & Archer.

Basically it's a constructive way to use all the amazing things we have gathered (and continue to gather), occasionally it's nice to blow the dust off something and see it get used in a photoshoot, or even bought for someones home or office.

We buy, sell and hire anything that looks like it's past its used by date, or is from an era we maybe wish we were in now.

It's fun, shooting everything is awesome, and it gives me a good excuse to keep hunting for stuff!

FIND: Ozi Skates from a long time ago

I found this amazing piece of wood a long time ago and today I may have to part with it to cover my framing costs for the upcoming 12 x 12 show!

It's funny how your priorities change when you have bills to pay!

It's possibly the only NOS Ozi Skates Hawk rip off in existence. From a time when the pig shape was all the rage, probably from about 1982 or 3. Truly amazing!

FIND: Camilla Connolly Piece

Crazy things happen. Today I popped into one of my favourite haunts, the Stotts Creek Tip Shop. I get all sorts of amazing stuff there, but today was extra special.

I was on my way out of the shop after buying a timber magazine stand when a piece of artwork took my eye. From a distance I was interested in it's loose, thick oil application, beautiful colours and because I could only see a little bit of it I was certain that it would be a print. But, to my surprise, I picked it up and quickly realised it was an original. Amazing!

$3 later and it was in the car with me.

When I finally got home I did a little looking around and discovered that the artist, Camilla Connolly is a very successful professional artist, and i'd be looking at about $1,000 if I dropped by Anthea Polson's to buy a piece by Camilla!

I was able to get in touch with the artist, just to check that it wasn't a stolen work and while it isn't, she has no idea how it got to the tip, but she was happy that it ended up in my collection.

Last night I was in an artshow in Brisbane called 'I Used To Skate Once'. Big thanks to Matt for inviting me, very appreciated. If you're in Brisbane check out his stores The Outpost and Blonde Venus!

This is the board I exhibited:

It's a recreation of the first new skateboard that I ever got.

It was given to me for Xmas in 1992 by my Uncle Mal. It's a Powell Peralta, Frankie Hill and it's been at the core of my skateboard collecting disorder for about the last 10 years. I decided a long time ago that I would try and hunt down an unused one, turns out they were produced at a time when Powell was all but going out of business, trying to adjust to the new coming of brands at the time, so they weren't making the huge runs of graphics they had been. It was a tough board to find but I persisted and eventually, about 10 years after I started looking I got lucky and found one unused. The board has a special significance, it was the board that really committed me to skateboarding, and in turn skateboarding has gone on to define the path of my life.

I thank my Uncle Mal so much for buying me that board, for always being so supportive of me as a skateboarder and of course to Sean Cliver for creating such an amazing piece of artwork. I hope you don't mind that it's almost an exact copy, it's supposed to be of course.

Here's the original, it's tucked nicely away somewhere safe and it's not one of those C&D pieces of shit, it's an amazing piece of wood thats for sure:

FIND: Old & Gold

I went to this thing called 'Old & Gold' on Saturday.

Basically the whole town of Brunswick Heads goes garage sale and vintage market mad and, well, it was amazing to say the least. 70 garage sales in one town, f**k me, I thought i'd died and gone to somewhere more awesome than earth.

I got there at 7am and left at about 3pm with a car full of really amazing stuff. Eventually i'll get to shooting them properly and posting them but for now here are a couple of nice paper goods I got.

I met a nice old man named Bill, he owned the Brunswick Service Station his whole life, and his father did the same sort of thing before him. He sold me some great things including these amazing labels from his father's automotive business in Lismore.

This is a beautiful old Standard Vanguard instruction manual that I got from another garage sale at a man named Harry's house, amazing. He also gave me some really nicely painted wood.

FIND: Darkroom Timer, Rulers & a Printers Drawer

I've been finding a lot of amazing stuff lately. The things i'm getting have ridiculous amounts of character and authentic ware, they're unique and I think that's what I love so much.

Here are a couple of things for the sake of posting.

Novex Darkroom Timer:

Loving the simplistic design and type used on the face, nice.

Folding Timber Rulers:

I've started to develop a bit of a thing for timber rulers. They seem to ware super nice, especially when they get oily and beaten around a bit.

Timber Printers Drawer / Tray

This is amazing! I got this Printers Drawer from a garage sale a few weeks back. It looks home made maybe, and the dividers are painted in three different pastels, the timber is beautifully weathered and its super sturdy. Awesome find.

ART: Progress and some chewing

I haven't posted in ages, work has been mental!

First up, here is a piece I started working on, i'm just trying out something here. The blue tape will make sense later.

And this is kind of funny, fairly earth shattering, a little numbing and still quite bizarre.

I spent 5 months working on 12 pieces for the We Are The Image Makers 12 x 12 invitational show, only to come home on the weekend to a big fucking surprise. Thanks Olly!

I'm still going to frame and show the work, i have to really. They actually look pretty rad all chewed up and played on!!!!

Check out the colours and the work that has gone into the logoing. The fonts are amazing, i'm assuming this is from the 40's maybe... so nice.

Vintage Photo Album - late 1800's:

I could do an entire blog about this photo album, it's amazing! Illustrated, embossed, gold foiled and full of amazing surprises. I really have to get this back to its original family somehow.

FIND: A garage full of goodness!

Ok, so I've not updated this blog for a little while for a couple of reasons.

One of them is that i've been drawing so much for the 5 shows i've been invited into between now and December, and the other reason is because i've found so much stuff the last week and a bit, so shooting photo's (of some of it) was going to take time.

So here is some stuff, excuse the long post.

Scrabble, 1940/50's edition, amazing! Really amazing!

This got me excited when I found it at a little Op Shop in Paradise Point.

It's in amazing condition, isn't missing a single letter tile and has the most amazing colours and fonts going on.

I am totally stoked on this!

Timber Ammunition Box, 1957 maybe.

Got this gem at one of my local tip shops.

Antler Chandelier, this thing isn't old I don't think, but it's insane none the less!

Garage Sale in Southport turned that up for me.

Bushells Tea Tin - not sure of the age, i'll work that out later.

Got this at a Garage Sale on Kennedy Drive, Tweed Heads, hidden under the fake YSL bags.

This is such a little beauty, i found it tough to find any info so i'm not sure of it's age, but I kow for sure it's lost some colour, looks amazing though.

Dunlop Puncher Kit. The Midget.

Another garage sale pick up. This little tin is rad, the design, the simple type work, the colouring, I love it!

Ilford Film Canister . Well and truly from days gone by, no pixels were ever in that container. Again, amazing colouring and fonts.

I got this great little guy from a Garage Sale near my house.

Vintage Kodak Film Canister.

How rad is the embossed lettering, and the colour is super nice too.

Got this from the same Garage Sale as the Ilford Canister.

Ken Done 'Frangipani' Signed and Numbered Print.

I picked up this at a Garage Sale in Mermaid Waters. This was a pretty random find and at $5 I was pretty stoked. I'm a big Ken Done fan so this was a nice surprise.

Vintage Norco Ice Cream Tin.

I love this tin, it's colour, the graphics, the fonts, this thing is awesome.

Here's a little secret... the Ilford and Kodak Canisters and the Dunlop puncher kit were inside this gem. Surprise!

Vintage small port case.

Just awesome. I bought this off an old man in Nerang. He was such a nice fellow and he was happy to see this go to me because I was so excited about it. Thankyou old chap.

1930/40's Black Western Electric Bakelite Desk Phone.

This thing is beautiful, grabbed this from one of my local tip shops last weekend for $10. It's heavy and it's dying to be used again!

Last but not last forever, is this Vintage KBC Power Chief drill box and manual.

Thanks tip shop, i love the colours of the box, the manual is amazing too. Check out the illustration of the drill, along with the freestyle title texts, awesome!

FIND: Bottles

First of all, look at those labels, printed right onto the glass, super basic, straight to the point, amazing!

Graphics these days have to have so much shit incorporated into them that they lose their purpose somewhat. Things used to be so simple, or so it seemed.

Got these from a garage sale in Mullumbimby, really nice.

It's about the size of a watermelon and is the raddest colours.

FIND: Lanchester 8

I picked this little gem up today at one of my local op shops.

It's a print (I wish it was the original) of a Lanchester 8, produced in England by the company that would eventually become Jaguar (in a round about way).

This is what a car looked like in 1897 and this is what a rad little piece of art looks like in 2011.

Size is 22cm x 17cm framed.

Now back to drawing!

ART: Comb Gallery Opening

We had an intern named Benny come and work with us for a few months. Great young man, full of youthful motivation and a keen sense of style.

When he finished up he said that he wanted to open a gallery / coffee shop and I passed it off as something that would probably not happen, not in a bad way, just that I myself have said that a few times and i've heard it before and seen nothing eventuate.

Anyway, not only did Intern Benny prove me wrong, he even invited me to exhibit as a part of the opening, that makes me happy, thanks Benny.

I also got these perspex ones.

I had a great old time garage saling on Saturday morning and picked myself up this beautiful Peugeot road bike. Check it out, it's insane. Had a bunch of fun riding around Byron on Saturday.

Check this rad little pin badge, obviously from 1964, sporting the name Ivy Missen of Cremorne, NSW. I wish I could find out what is was for.

You have to see it in real life to appreciate the attention to detail, it's so amazing. The ducks are done so nicely. Really stoked to get this.

FIND: WW2 Trunk

This is an amazing NZ Issue WW2 Trunk.

I got this earlier in the week, it's in moderate condition, the most amazing part of it is the hand painted lettering of the diggers name; Maj. W.W. Little.

I'd love to know more about this piece, for now it's tucked in my spare room.

There isn't much in my life that brings me more excitement than going hunting for old, weathered, quirky and surprising stuff.

Introducing the other side of my split personality blog: 'THE TREMENDOUS THINGS THAT TAKE THEMSELVES TO TROY'.

Original artwork, prints, boxes, letters, numbers, lights, furniture, fabric, random ephemera, books, toys, skateboards and the list honestly goes on and on. These are the things that I think about everyday and the hunt really never ends.

So from now on, every time I find something new, i'm posting it here for you to see, if you really like something let me know, i'll probably sell it to you for the sake of making room in my cluttered garage.

I've working on a whole batch of new works for a show i've been invited to in Sydney, in July.

I'm super excited and of course i'm working my fingers to the bone trying to do stuff that i'm happy with.

Here's a little progress picture of a piece that consists of my traditional biro medium, and drops in some of my new watercolour pattern i'm enjoying at the moment.

it just feels nice to be putting some colours down.

The last few days have been spent adding some more colour.

I'm having a great time with this pattern, I love how it breathes new life into a discarded piece of art.

I'm off again

This is my new thing, and i think i'll be on this trip for a while.

Basically what i'm doing is taking prints or originals that I find or buy, or even pieces i've had kicking around at home, then add this triangular pattern to certain parts. It's super fun and the piece itself tends to dictate where the pattern needs to go, i'm really enjoying it.

The other thing that I absolutely love about this is that I have to go and find pieces to add the pattern to, which is amazing because there is almost nothing in existence that I love more than treasure hunting, honestly, it's pretty much my favourite thing!

I've been working almost exclusively with biro for a couple of years, so it's nice to be super hooked on something with infinite colour and shape opportunities.

I'm working on a whole new body of work like this, so i'll keep you posted.

This is done over a vintage rose print on a heavyweight and blemished paper.

This is done in conjunction with a biro piece I had hanging around.

I've been working way too much, 60+ hrs a week. On top of that we've been trying to get our renovation finished.

However, last night I went to a show put on by two friends of mine, Colin Wyatt and Kiel Tillman, and i got really inspired to get the ball rolling again.

Also, i got invited by the Monster Children Gallery to be a part of their end of year show, that got me motivated to create again too.

So here I am, back once more.

LD Creation

I was asked recently to do the branding story for Luke Dorrington, an accomplished surfer from the Gold Coast who's father is a long time surfboard maker. Luke has decided to focus on the creation of surfboards himself, as opposed to chasing his dream of being a professional surfer.

It sure was a pleasure to work on this because Luke is a great guy and the only brief I got was "I want something different".

The idea was simple, I wanted to create something stylish and premium, which is what Luke's surfing has been described as. I also wanted to create something strong and timeless.

I'm posting this today because I picked up a surfboard from him, complete with the new logo story, super happy with it.

I get hyper-hyped when I get a mention on-line or in print. I'll never dumb it down by saying "yeah whatev's, I didn't really pay attention" because that would be bullshit.

I pretty much get a mention on something then hop straight on the phone to Mum. I'm that proud of myself.

So this time I got a little mention on the Oyster Magazine site about being involved in the "This Is How We Roll" exhibition.

Jaime Fazackerley held the preview of his new television show titled 'This Is How We Roll' in Perth on the 15th of May.

He also held an artshow in conjunction with it, of which i was lucky enough to be involved. Jaime just sent me over some photo's from the opening and I pulled a spread of my favourite pieces of artwork from it to show here.

Not sure who the artists are for most of them but the work is great.

But for now I thought i'd post a sneaky little pic or two of another new piece i started. Not 100% sure where this is going but it's going somewhere. I'm enjoying mixing some media; biro, gouache and indian ink to be precise.

I've been invited to exhibit in a group show celebrating the launch of a youth culture television series called "This is how we roll".

The exhibition is to be held in Perth in June.

My Mum and Sister Kim are both from Perth and we all lived there for a little while so it's going to be nice to exhibit one of my pieces in a group show over there.

This is a piece i've been meaning to finish for some time, it's kind of an experimental work because it mixes some different media, something that i've wanted to try for a while.

It's Gouache, Blue & Red Biro and Coloured Pencil.

Here are some progress photos.

I'll post a full picture once it's finished.

I got invited to exhibit in a new show coming up at Retrospect Galleries in Byron Bay.

I'm not sure if the nature of the show is common knowledge yet so I won't go into it.

Instead, i'll just show a sneaky little detail shot of the first piece that i've created for it.

I finished my Salvador Dali tribute.

I'm back at work tomorrow so it's nice to see it finished. A bunch of late nights, Florence and the Machine on repeat and more tea than you can poke a teaspoon at and i'm all done.

Started another piece like I said I would. The weather was crappy again, so I spent most of the day at the table, in front of the A/C, eating chocolate, drinking tea and making biro marks on watercolour paper.

This new piece is a tribute to my old mate Salvador Dali, the first artist that really made me lose my mind about art. I know what the end result will be but I can't be assed typing it out. Keep an eye out in the next 100 hours or so for the end result.

Christmas is a distant memory, and i'll be back at work before I know it.

So I thought I would take advantage of the weather being shitty and the surf being less than average, and put pen to paper.

I got busy on this piece three days ago, pretty much just attacked it non stop until it was finished. A couple of late nights and long days and Bob's your Uncle (in fact, that could be your Uncle Bob in the picture?).

Super excited about picking up copies of the Retrospect Galleries yearbook. The whole book came together amazingly!

They really do a great job of keeping the ball rolling, always plenty of beautiful work available and friendly smiles everywhere! Get down or up to Byron this Christmas, have a stroll around the gallery then head up to the gellati shop on the way to the beach, sounds good hey.

It's exciting for me to be in there among some of my favourite artists, including Kelsey Brookes Nick Plowman and Kareena Zerefos.

Nice way to end a busy year.

A while back I posted a progress photo of a shoe I was working on for a show hosted by Sneak n Destroy.

Well last night the show was on, so now it's cool for me to post a couple of photo's of my finished shoe.

The shoe I covered in biro is an ELEMENT all white Omahigh, nice shoe and quite a nice canvas to work on.

My new piece continues to haunt me. It's going to end up being one big mass of little circles filled with mouths, noses, eyes, hair, part's of this and that and so forth. I've learnt one thing very quickly; the larger the paper the bigger the headache.

I got talking to a guy in the UK after I stumbled across his website, nice guy actually and fully fledged biro skills, he's like a biro ninja or something I think.

Sneakers Show

Sneaker Culture is stronger than ever!

Sure I read Sneaker Freaker and step into the occasional sneaker boutique, but there is so much more to it. Sneaker heads live this shit, big time! I met a sneaker head not too long ago, his name is Mark Duckworth and he runs a relatively new sneaker boutique on the Gold Coast called Sneak n Destroy. The store is small, fresh and has amazing product in it. Like all sneaker heads Mark is passionate about his hobby come profession and he's having a sneaker art show to celebrate it!

And guess what? I'm lucky enough to be in the show. Yay.

I was having a chat to my dog this morning and he told me that he gets really bored at home when he's by himself. So i decided to bring him to work with me today, safe to say that he'll prevent most of the people here from getting anything done!

Speaking of getting things done, I started playing around with some new pieces last night, just some ideas really. I want to do a big ditsy floral piece in coloured pencil, i'll see if that eventuates, i made a little test piece and it works well so we'll see...

And I finally got onto some biros that seem to shade really well, in case i've never mentioned it before, biros are so temperamental, hopefully these ones behave!

When hair isn't connected, I hate it! Like when you find it on your raisin toast, or in your salad or something, argh. Pubes are the worst! Who's is this? Why is this pube here in my meal? Oh shit, that is the worst for sure.

Anyway, this new piece has a load of hair happening, but it's all connected so i'm in the clear.

I'll keep posting it as it gets towards being finished!

New Show - Petits Travaux

I'm lucky enough to be included in another show at Retrospect Gallery in Byron Bay! It's coming up soon, opens on the 27th of November and is called 'Petits Travaux'. I have been referring to it as The Smalls, which is probably the English translation?

I don't have a flyer to show you yet but i've got a couple more of my "hairy fruit and vegetables" to show you. The whole series of 9 will be on the wall at the show.

We just got 'trick or treated' by a kid who wasn't even dressed up one bit, we're so lame with Halloween down here.

In other news, I sold out at Art Sydney!!! I was hoping they would like biro as a medium in Sydney and luckily for me they did! Thanks a million to Bree and the gang at Retrospect for lugging all my stuff down there, thank goodness they didn't have to bring it all back!! So stoked.

In other news, the Day of the Dead Show opens tomorrow at Retrospect, get along!

Also, i've been super busy getting ready for the show following that at Retrospect, it's called The Smalls Show, that's the one i'm doing the hairy fruit and vegetables for. I've done 6, i've got 3 to go.

So far i've done an Apple, an Avocado, a Cabbage, a Banana, a cob of Corn and some Grapes, all as hairy as a female human,or a male human with long hair.

New Show - 'the Smalls'

I'm in a show at Retrospect Gallery in Byron Bay called 'the Smalls'. It's pretty straight forward, basically it's 9 small pieces, 25cm x 25cm framed. Each piece in the series needs to tie together.

I've decided to do a series of hairy fruit and vegetables, no reason really. Oh, apart from feeling like I desperately needed to use some colour!

Looking forward to seeing these all come together as a set, should be cool.

Day of the Dead

Try your hardest to get down (or up) to Byron Bay for the Day of the Dead show, which opens Sunday, November 1. I'm personally looking forward to seeing what Nic Plowman has created for this show, his work is awesome.

The Day of the Dead show is at Retrospect Gallery on Johnson St, for the record I have one piece in the show. I think it's down below somewhere.

I got my work back from the framer. Big props to him, he does a great job, i'm super happy. This spread is getting wrapped up and sent off tomorrow for Art Sydney. Stoked that's out of the way!

I just got a new piece done for a show coming up at Retrospect in Byron Bay. The show is called Day of the Dead and celebrates all things religious, deathly and mysterious.

This is the full piece.

Basically the way I approached it was like this; I wanted to try and cover all three themes - Religion, Death & Mystery. Touching on dedications that aren't necessarily religious, but things people dedicate themselves too with religious dedication.

The overarching message is money and gambling, people are mental for that shit, hence the Clubs, Spades, Diamonds & Hearts symbols, then I just went ahead and filled it all in with relevant imagery; Benjamin Franklin is money, fish for fishing, 'the attacking birds' for mystery, skulls for death, and good old JC for religion directly.

Hopefully it fits into the show alright.

I think i've got time for one more sneaky piece for this show, so I better get back to it.

A few things.

I've been really busy preparing for Art Sydney of late so i've not blogged for a little bit.

Anyway, i'm going to make up for that in one foul swoop.

First up, I started on a new piece. This is for a group show in Miami on the Gold Coast for a new store called Sneak and Destroy. It's a super rad boutique sneaker culture store. They are featuring 12 or 16 artists with their work on shoes.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out, one thing i know for sure is that drawing on a shoe sucks. I won't take flat surfaces for granted any longer!

Up next, some of my friends are in this show in Melbourne, my friends are Andy Murphy and Steve Gourlay, go check out their work, so nice. The show is called Armageddon Wasted and I wish I was there to see it.

And last but not least, my good friend Trent Bonham just added this beauty to his skateboard collection recently. The board is a Gonz Blind board that has been redrawn by Gonz, so it's an original Mark Gonzales piece right there on a classic Gonz board, priceless.
